PalmsCNN - Palm Tree Detection RPAs
This plug-in automatically detects 3 palm species in RGB imagery acquired with RPAs: aguaje (Mauritia flexuosa), huasai (Euterpe precatoria) and ungurahui (Oenocarpus bataua). For good results, the imagery must have a resolution of 4 cm/pixel or finer.
The palm detection plug-in uses Deep Learning models trained to automatically detect 3 palm species: aguaje (Mauritia flexuosa), huasai (Euterpe precatoria), ungurahui (Oenocarpus bataua) (Tagle et al. 2025, https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-025-58358-5). This plug-in was developed within the projects "Supervisiones Optimizadas" and "New approaches to understand the state of biodiversity and contribute to social well-being: a study of the distribution and degradation of Mauritia flexuosa in the Amazon", through the collaboration of OSINFOR, IIAP, SERNANP, the University of Leeds, the University of Brescia and Wageningen University, with funding from the Newton Fund, FONDECYT, WWF, GIZ and USAID.
