The White Space Mapping Tool provides an innovative and customizable approach to identifying potential areas for the installation of solar and wind energy facilities.
The White Space Mapping Tool provides an innovative and customizable approach to identifying potential areas for the installation of solar and wind energy facilities. It enables a systematic review of restrictive and excluding criteria on a map, facilitating an efficient inventory of available space potential. This process is based on the evaluation of geographic base data using a Geographic Information System (GIS) application such as QGIS. Extensive official geospatial data forms the basis for determining potential areas integrated into the White Space Mapping Tool. In QGIS, this data can be incorporated in various formats such as tables, text, via Web Feature Service (WFS), or other geospatial formats. The workflow for white space identification is automated and efficiently designed. After selecting a project area, relevant layers are loaded, followed by setting up buffering according to specific distance rules. Subsequently, the "punching out" or subtracting of buffered areas from the project area is performed. The result is a clear map representation that easily identifies potential white spaces at a glance. Once the white space mapping is created based on defined criteria, white space analysis follows. This involves tabular representation of areas calculated for categories and the resulting technical potentials. These pieces of information serve as a basis for further planning and analysis within the context of renewable energy projects. Another function of the tool is the initial categorization of white spaces based on specific criteria such as the distance to the nearest transformer. This additional decision-making layer allows for further analysis and prioritization of potential areas to identify the best locations for renewable energy projects.
