Data Setup Hints

About scipy (required for Flow Buffer / SHC computation)

Without scipy, Flow Buffer display and SHC computation do not work. DEM reprojection and resampling use GDAL.

Windows (standard installer): scipy is normally already included. If it's genuinely missing, close QGIS and run in Command Prompt from your QGIS install's bin folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\QGIS 3.44\bin\):
python-qgis-ltr.bat -m pip install --user scipy
(The filename may be python-qgis.bat depending on your install; adjust the path to match your QGIS version.)

Linux: close QGIS and run in a terminal:
sudo apt install python3-scipy

To check what's actually loaded after installing, run the following in QGIS's Python Console:
import numpy, scipy
print(numpy.__file__, numpy.__version__)
print(scipy.__file__, scipy.__version__)

DEM / DSM/DTM Data

The plugin prepares a square, metre-based analysis DEM automatically, then aligns DSM to its final grid. Suitable projected CRSs are retained; geographic and Web Mercator DEMs are converted to local UTM. Keep the source CRS defined and use the same height datum for DEM and DSM. Source files are preserved; changing the project display CRS is not required. Preparation details are recorded in params.json.

Virtual Shizuoka Features

The DEM browser only offers VS LP/Grid DTM / VS LP -> DSM when the current Design Preview extent overlaps Shizuoka Prefecture. Pan/zoom the preview into Shizuoka first if these options are not listed.
Virtual Shizuoka data is provided under a dual license: CC BY 4.0 / ODbL.

Open data outside Japan (Netherlands / France / New Zealand)

The PDOK WCS (Netherlands) can be slow, LiDAR HD does not yet cover all of France and no data is published in restricted zones, and the LINZ copy on AWS may lag the latest LINZ release. These notes are also shown in the DEM browser.
Licences: AHN — CC0; IGN LiDAR HD — Licence Ouverte (Etalab 2.0); LINZ — CC BY 4.0 (Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand and the survey licensors).

Re-fetching before analysis

For auto-fetched DEM sources (GSI, Terrarium, Virtual Shizuoka, Nagano, Netherlands, France, New Zealand), the analysis uses the DEM already fetched. Only when the analysis area extends beyond it, the plugin asks whether to fetch it again: OK re-fetches the DEM (and the DSM, if set) and then runs the analysis; No cancels the run. Local DEM/DSM files are analysed on the overlapping part without asking.

Parameter Setting Hints

Slope Stability (Infinite Slope Model)

Computes the slope stability factor of safety (FS) using the infinite slope model.
FS is calculated from slope angle, internal friction angle, cohesion, soil depth, and saturation ratio.
FS < 1.0: collapse risk / FS < FS threshold: caution
All parameters describe the properties of the "topsoil down to the hard layer".

ParameterGuideline / how to check on-site
Internal friction angle φ'
Interlock of topsoil particles
Check by picking up and squeezing soil in your hand on site.
・Holds shape when squeezed but crumbles when wet → φ 20–28°
(fine sand/clay, slopes with surface wash marks after rain)
・Forms a clump when squeezed but breaks apart → φ 30–35°
(typical mountain soil/loam in cedar/cypress plantations)
・Doesn't hold shape, feels gritty → φ 38°+
 (gravel/rock debris, ridgelines, near-bedrock layers)
Cohesion c'
Stickiness/bonding of topsoil
・Sandy soil, young stand with shallow roots → 0 kPa
・Gravelly loam, mid-age stand → 5 kPa
・Organic clay soil → 10–20 kPa
Soil depth z
Thickness of topsoil
Dig or probe with a backhoe or steel rod to the boundary where the layer changes (color/hardness/grain size). The hard layer is a candidate slip surface.
Saturation ratio m ・0.5 = half-saturated (normal conditions)
・0.9 = after heavy rain
FS threshold Not a physical value — a review setting (default 1.2). See How to use the FS threshold below.

How to use the FS threshold (design FS)

FS itself is a physical quantity computed from the four site parameters (φ, c', z, m). The FS threshold is not a physical value — it is how conservative you choose to be, set from the consequence of failure, the permanence of the operation, and the level of uncertainty. It is not a per-site number; site conditions go into the four parameters.

FS thresholdWhen to use (guide)
0.8Check whether any especially hazardous spots exist (little to protect downslope / temporary work)
1.2 (default)Pick up hazards worth noting (ordinary forest roads and operations)
1.5Keep a safety margin (permanent roads, stream crossings, higher uncertainty)
2.0+Sites needing special care (houses / key structures downslope, heavy-rain scenario)

How to read this judgment

The plugin looks at the stability of the mountainside before a forest road is built (the natural slope). "Caution" means that slope is already on the more failure-prone side — it is not a statement about what angle a forest road can or cannot be built on. Construction-guideline slope classes (e.g. Japan's 25°/35° bands) are a guide to earthwork volume and whether structures are needed once a road is built — a different question. Do not compare the two numbers directly. Planning a forest road also involves conditions the plugin does not look at: securing fill material, disposing of surplus soil, handling stumps and roots, drainage, and more.

The "construction guideline" referenced above is Japan's forest-road construction standard If you are working under a different country's or region's standard, substitute your own local guideline for the same comparison.

Valley Terrain (TWI)

TWI (Topographic Wetness Index) = ln(A / tan(β)) identifies wet zones.
Higher values indicate valleys/lowlands where water tends to accumulate.

ParameterConcept
TWI threshold Filters areas below the set value as dry terrain.
Setting 8.0 extracts mainly valley areas prone to wetness. Raising the value increases areas classified as dry, missing more wet terrain.
Minimum catchment area Lower bound for excluding small flow paths. Smaller values detect finer valley terrain.

Flow Direction Method (Valley/TWI only)

Choose from 3 methods for how water is routed when computing TWI and valley zones. This choice affects Valley Terrain (TWI) only — flow estimation always uses D8.
It's a trade-off between "how sharp the valley lines are" and "how accurate the wetness distribution is".

D8 (Single Steepest) D∞ (Tarboton) MFD (Multiple Flow Direction)
Routes water to a single cell. Produces a sharp, single-line valley, but vertical striping artifacts appear on the TWI surface. Splits flow between 2 adjacent cells. No striping, and the valley line is reasonably preserved — an intermediate approach. Distributes flow across all downslope directions. Smoothest wetness distribution. Valleys follow the bottom of the terrain but are thick and diffuse.
Use for: identifying dangerous channels where water concentrates (collapse-prone channels, channels to avoid when routing roads). Use for: when you want a surface that keeps the line while avoiding striping. Use for: representing valley terrain accurately as a surface (wetness/hazard surface).

Reference values (same sample DEM as above, 2m, matched valley area — analysis area: 72 ha)

MethodApprox. TWI thresholdExtracted valley areaShare (of 72 ha)
D8approx. 5.22.01 ha2.8%
D∞approx. 5.42.21 ha3.1%
MFDapprox. 5.92.87 ha4.0%

How to read this: A method with a small share and thin lines (D8) points to "dangerous channels." A method with a large share and thick areas (MFD) represents "the valley terrain itself" as a surface.

Because the catchment scale differs by method, the TWI threshold needed to match the same valley area shifts between methods. When switching methods, re-adjust the TWI threshold above (e.g., 5.2 for D8 → around 5.9 for MFD).

The three images above are illustrative renderings showing the behavioral differences between methods, not plugin output. They were rendered from a sample DEM (2m resampled) solely to illustrate the differences. Actual output (twi.tif, valley_zones.gpkg) is generated by running the analysis.

Flow Load Estimation (Time-Area Method / Clark Unit Hydrograph)

Estimates the hydraulic load along drainage paths by the time-area method. The upstream area of every cell is split into equal-travel-time bands (isochrones), convolved with a design-storm hyetograph, then routed through one linear reservoir (R = 0.75 × Tc). Three "load" layers are produced:

LayerMeaning
Peak load  Qp [m³/s] Maximum instantaneous discharge — the acute load. Highest where a steep, compact catchment concentrates its flow in sync. Used to identify where crossing or culvert capacity, scour protection, and the width of the exposed zone require closer consideration.
Mean load  Qm [m³/s] Event volume divided by the local response time (duration + Tc) — the sustained load. Suppressed where Tc is large. Peak ÷ Mean indicates flashiness.
Time load  Tc [h] Time of concentration — how fast the upstream area responds. Near zero on hillslopes and headwaters, largest toward the basin outlet.

This is a planning guideline, not an exact hydraulic solution. It assumes a linear, time-invariant response, overland flow on small-to-medium catchments (order of a few km² or less), a single triangular design storm, and D8 flow routing. References: Clark (1945); Chow, Maidment & Mays, Applied Hydrology (1988); USDA NRCS National Engineering Handbook, Part 630.

ParameterConcept
i_peak (peak rainfall intensity) Peak intensity of the design storm [mm/h]. Must be at least the mean intensity (total ÷ duration). The three rain fields bound each other dynamically — an inconsistent combination cannot be entered, and a field flashes when it is pinned by the constraint.
Total precipitation Total depth of the design storm [mm]. Sets the storm volume (used for Mean load and the internal total volume).
Duration T Storm duration [h]. Drives the design hyetograph and, together with Tc, the peak attenuation of large catchments.
Runoff coefficient C 0.8 means about 80% of rainfall is calculated as surface runoff.
Velocity coefficient Guideline: forest 0.3 / grassland 0.6 / paved surface 1.5 m/s.
When DSM/DTM is set, the runoff and velocity coefficients are computed per cell from canopy height. The editable coefficient fields apply only to missing DSM cells; without a usable DSM they apply to the entire analysis area.

Active analysis runs are saved in subfolders whose names combine a three-digit run sequence with the number of output files: for example, 0017 is sequence 001 with 7 files, and 0030+2 is sequence 003 with 12 files. Runs are never deleted automatically — an overwrite run replaces its own sequence, otherwise the sequence increases. Deleting a middle sequence leaves it unused, while deleting the highest sequence frees it for reuse. Export to Project moves the selected active run to archive/<name>/; it is then managed under Named Exports and is not replaced by later overwrite analyses. Deleting an active run folder also lets the DEM/DSM cache cleanup free files in dem/, vs_lp_grid/, and remote_dem/ that no remaining run references and that are not currently loaded. To keep the output folder and its cache from growing without bound, delete active run folders you no longer need directly in the file manager; cleanup runs when the plugin next refreshes the analysis list.

Feature Descriptions

Background processing (progress / stop)

Analysis, DEM/DSM fetching, CS MAP export and WebODM Importer export run in the background, so QGIS stays responsive. During analysis, the Run Analysis button becomes a progress bar showing the percentage, with the current step and the estimated time remaining below it (the estimate is based on the previous run). Stop stops the analysis, and Cancel on the DEM / DSM row stops a fetch. Switching projects or closing the plugin window cancels a running task and removes its partial files.

CS MAP Export

Run Export under Terrain Data > CS Map Export creates a CS-style terrain visualization from the selected DEM. Local DEM files are exported as a whole raster; fetched sources such as VS LP/Grid, GSI DEM, and Terrarium use the currently fetched DEM raster. The output file name is derived from the exported area's center coordinate and size, so exports of different areas never collide or overwrite one another. When Overwrite Same Location is checked (default), re-exporting the same area replaces the previous file for that location; unchecked, each re-export of that same area is kept as a separate file instead. The export is always added to QGIS; when Set As Layer is checked, it is also set as the current Layer Settings > Tile Layer selection.

Input data: a CS-style map only resolves micro-relief that is genuinely present in the DEM, and it assumes a LiDAR-grade ground surface. A photogrammetric DTM (e.g. from WebODM / drone imagery) has low ground-surface accuracy: under forest canopy the ground is largely interpolated between sparse points, so fine structure in the CS map can be an interpolation artifact rather than real terrain. Prefer LiDAR, or open-terrain / leaf-off captures; treat forested photogrammetric results as indicative only.
Note: The color balance is tuned for Forestry Operations Lite so analysis layers such as flow, wetness, and terrain features remain easy to interpret.

Example: CS-style terrain output set as the Tile Layer, with Valley Terrain and Flow Estimation overlaid. The tuned colour balance keeps the overlay readable against the terrain.

CS立体図 is a terrain visualization method proposed by Nagano Prefecture Forestry Research Center. The method is described as open, but exported maps also follow the license and attribution requirements of the input DEM.

Slope Stability

Computes the stability factor FS using the infinite slope model. FS < 1.0 indicates collapse risk, FS < 1.5 indicates a caution zone. Calculated from soil parameters (φ, c, γ), terrain slope, and soil depth.

Valley Terrain

Vector data extracted from the DEM, showing catchment terrain and valley lines. Used to check for interference with the drainage network when planning road/skid-trail networks.

Wetness Terrain

Topographic Wetness Index (TWI) raster. Higher values indicate greater water accumulation, poor drainage, weak ground, and higher mud risk.

Flow Load Estimation

Estimates the hydraulic load along drainage paths by the time-area method (Clark unit hydrograph). Produces three layers: Peak load (acute), Mean load (sustained), and Time load (Tc, response speed). Peak and Mean differ by terrain concentration as well as by the storm's peakiness. When DSM is set, the runoff and velocity coefficients vary per cell from canopy height.

Analysis Layer Display (Filter / Buffer)

In the Analysis panel, cycling the Flow button switches Peak load → Mean load → Time load. Filter (Off / Low / Mid) fades out low values to isolate the drainage skeleton — Peak and Mean share one filter setting, Time load has its own. Buffer adds a soft bleed around the flow lines. Peak and Mean share one buffer setting, while Time load has its own independent buffer setting. For an active numbered run the buffer is a temporary display layer. For a Named Export it is stored as a GeoTIFF alongside the analysis files and follows the named layer's visibility.

Integrated Risk

An additive risk index (0–6) combining FS, TWI, and peak load. Extracts areas where multiple hazard factors overlap as "high-priority" polygons.

Named Exports

Select an active numbered run and click Export to Project (first row of Analysis Layer Display, next to the run selector), then enter a unique name. FOL moves the run out of the active sequence into Named Exports and adds the analysis display layers found for that run to QGIS as a persistent group with the same name. The current visibility, opacity, Filter, and Flow Buffer settings become the starting display state. QGIS styles are saved as adjacent .qml files; enabled Flow Buffers are materialised as real GeoTIFFs. The layers keep the same stacking order as the analysis display. The folder also holds the analysis DEM (elev_relief.tif, shown as Elevation Background), so a Named Export stays complete after its source run or the DEM cache is deleted, and its folder can be moved to another project or PC.

Selecting a Named Export already present in the Layers panel connects FOL directly to those real project layers. It does not create a temporary Run <name> copy. Visibility, opacity, Filter, and Flow Buffer changes made through FOL are applied to the named layers and retained. No second export is needed. A Named Export always uses its own display settings: it does not take over the settings of the analysis runs, and switching back to a run restores the run settings used before the Named Export was selected.

If the named group has been removed from Layers, selecting its name again asks Load it permanently into Layers? Yes reloads the saved layers and styles; No leaves the current selection and display unchanged. Groups exported by earlier versions (named Forestry Operations Lite - <run> and referring to the run folder) are left as they are. When that run is exported with Export to Project, those earlier groups are removed from the project and replaced by the new named group. If the project is then closed without saving, the plugin reconnects those groups to the Named Export the next time its window opens and shows a notice. Save the project to keep the new locations. The internal storage path is archive/<name>/; Named Exports is the user-facing name.
Runs and Named Exports made with the QGIS 3 version of FOL have no Hillshade or Elevation Background. FOL creates them in the background when you show them for a run or select the Named Export, from the analysis DEM on the analysis grid, and adds them to the named group with the plugin's colours. A Named Export uses its own elev_relief.tif; one exported before it held a DEM uses the DEM recorded for the analysis, and if that file is no longer found, the two layers cannot be created and a message says so.
Renaming a Named Export. Remove its group from the Layers panel, save the project, and close QGIS. While QGIS is closed, rename the folder archive/<name>/. Then open the project, select the new name in the analysis run selector, and answer Yes to Load it permanently into Layers? to load it again. The folder name is used as the group name.

Export for WebODM Importer

The Export for WebODM Importer section (Terrain Data tab) packages the loaded terrain data into a ZIP that webodm_importer can load directly. The ZIP is saved in zip/ under the analysis output folder (FOL_YYYYMMDD-all.zip, numbered when exported again on the same day).

WebODM Importer Integration

When the current QGIS project contains datasets managed by webodm_importer, their WebODM DTM/DSM assets can be selected directly from the DEM/DSM browser in Forestry Operations Lite.

Analysis Logic, Limits, and Intent

Forestry Operations Lite does not treat any one layer as the answer. It places several indicators on the same terrain so that their overlap, separation, and location can be examined before forestry work is planned. The values are calculated consistently from the selected data and settings, but they remain indicators of the conditions represented by that data and scenario.

How the current analysis is constructed

Limits to keep visible

Why FOL uses indicators

Calling the outputs indicators is not a denial of analysis. More accurate terrain data, better parameters, and improved methods can bring an analysis closer to actual conditions. That improvement can continue, but data and computation do not become the field itself. The same applies to larger or institutionally published models: more components provide a different and often more detailed approximation, not an automatic claim to truth.

Field observation is therefore not used merely to certify whether the map is correct. The map helps decide where to look; the site supplies context that the data does not hold; and the practitioner updates the work plan from both. Slope Stability, Valley Terrain, Flow Load, background terrain, and existing roads should be read together when considering road alignment, harvesting and extraction, drainage, crossings, or areas to retain and protect.

FOL does not decide whether work can or cannot be carried out. It provides a common starting point for asking what is happening at a location, what could change through the work, and what should be checked before a decision is made. The final interpretation and decision remain with the people who know and work in the forest.

TWI(地形湿潤指数)= ln(A / tan(β)) で湿潤帯を識別します。

流向方式(Valley/TWI 専用)

D8(単一最急) D∞(Tarboton) MFD(多方向)

実際の出力(twi.tif・valley_zones.gpkg)は解析を実行して生成されます。

Peak load  Qp [m³/s]
Time load  Tc [h]

参考:Clark (1945);Chow, Maidment & Mays『Applied Hydrology』(1988); USDA NRCS National Engineering Handbook, Part 630。

i_peak(最大降雨強度) 設計降雨のピーク強度 [mm/h]。

zip/FOL_*-all.zipExport for WebODM Importer の書き出し(DTM / DSM / Ortho。オランダ・フランス・ニュージーランドは DATA_SOURCES.txt 付き)
fol_archive.json、保存済み.qmlスタイル、有効なFlow BufferのGeoTIFF、解析のDEM(elev_relief.tif)を含む

CS MAP Export

(Filter / Buffer)

Named Exports

Load it permanently into Layers?
Load it permanently into Layers?

Export for WebODM Importer

Forestry Operations Lite
