Created by Daniel Ibarra Marinas, Facultad de Ingeniería y Ciencias, Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas (Mexico).
What it does:
- Casts transects perpendicular to a user-digitized baseline, with user-defined spacing and length (metres), and intersects them with a multitemporal shoreline layer (lines with a date field, Date type or ISO text YYYY-MM-DD).
- Computes per transect: Net Shoreline Movement (NSM, m), End Point Rate (EPR, m/yr) and Linear Regression Rate (LRR, m/yr). With 3 or more dates it also gives R², the standard error of the estimate (LSE) and the confidence interval of the LRR (LCI, at 90, 95 or 99 percent).
- Optional positional uncertainty per shoreline: a total error field, or its components combined in quadrature (image resolution counted as 1 pixel, georeferencing RMSE, digitizing error), or a single value. With it, the plugin computes the EPR uncertainty (EPRunc) and the Weighted Linear Regression (WLR, weights 1/U²) with WR2, WSE and its confidence interval (WCI).
- Classifies each transect as erosion, accretion, stable or unclassified (trend field). Stable means a rate not different from zero (statistical criterion, default) or below a user-defined threshold.
- DSAS-style sign convention: the user states whether the baseline is onshore or offshore, and each transect is oriented seaward. Positive rates mean accretion and negative rates mean erosion, whatever the digitizing direction of the baseline. Transects are drawn from land to sea.
- Quality checks per transect: flag (baseline crossing a shoreline, or seaward side undetermined) and tr_cross (transect crossing another transect). An optional baseline smoothing distance helps transects follow the general shape of the coast.
- Technical details: shoreline features with the same date are merged, so each date gives one position per transect; if a transect crosses a shoreline more than once, the intersection closest to the baseline is used; shorelines in a different CRS are reprojected to the baseline CRS, which must be projected and in metres.
Requirements and limitations:
- At least 2 dates are needed; with only 2 there is no R², LSE or confidence interval, so 3 or more are recommended.
- The baseline must lie entirely on one side of all shorelines. Transects where it does not are flagged (flag = 1: baseline crosses a shoreline; flag = 2: seaward side could not be determined).
- Positional uncertainty must be supplied by the user; the plugin does not estimate it. EPRunc and WLR are only as good as those values.
- Experimental: not yet tested extensively on real case studies. Please report problems in the issue tracker.
Find it in the Processing Toolbox under "FIC Coastal Change Analysis" > "Coastal".
---
- Calcula por transecto: Net Shoreline Movement (NSM, m), End Point Rate (EPR, m/año) y Linear Regression Rate (LRR, m/año).
